Is there a general rule for determining stem length once saddle height and position is found?

l have a tape measure in hand ready to go :)

Look at the stem there should be a line etched on it to tell you the maximum height. You may have to clean the stem to find it.

The rule of thumb is when you are on the drops, the handlebars should line up with the front axle.

Nope.no hard & fast rules IMO.

The only guideline for stem selection is to choose one that is allows u to be comfortable for ur physical condition & riding style.

If u need an unusually long stem to achieve a comfortable & desired riding position, u may really be better off with a larger frame.or at least one with a longer top tube.

If u need an extremely short stem, u might be riding a frame that is a bit large for u or one that has too long of a top tube. The issue with extreme stem lengths is the affect they have on the bike is handling properties.

l do not think there is enough truth in the principle of having the bar positioned so that it is in ur line of sight to the front axle. This guideline just does not address the variances in anatomy, specifically arm & torso length.as well as desired riding position.
